Memorial Day BBQ

Jump to Recipe

You see… the other day I made this Blueberry Galette. To say that it was delicious would be an understatement. To say that it was easy would be an understatement as well. You see, Galettes are quick and easy to whip up and if your weird like you me (I blame it on pastry school) you have individually wrapped pastry doughs just sitting in your freezer calling your name.  By the time it was done baking,  it was oozing with blueberry juice and it smelled like summer. Summer and Butter. I immediately ran to the fridge, grabbed some vanilla ice cream and ate almost the entire thing by myself. And when I say almost… I mean almost… I left some for the others too because I still have to fit into that bikini… and eating only 75% as opposed to the entire thing made it okay.

But before we can get to the Blueberry Galette we have to talk about Summer!

It’s summer time which means as a personal chef, its time to get my booty into gear and cook cook cook, no sleep, no breaks, just chop, prep, cut, saute, bbq and cook. This is a good thing… I need to pay the bills somehow right!! I have parties, graduations, cocktail hours, brunches and big BBQ’s coming up, all within the next month, with the first one starting this weekend! I mean its Memorial Day after all! Time to kick off summer and bring on the grill, the poolside cocktails and the fruity desserts! I’m ready! Who’s with me!!!

So here is what’s on my Memorial Day BBQ menu…mind you I am cooking for about 60 people… so I needed to keep the dishes manageable but super tasty!

Asparagus and Gruyere Tarts

The BEST Guacamole in the world… I mean seriously, who has a party without guacamole??! It’s not a party unless there is guac! And if you have a party without the guac… well then I’m not coming.

And what better way to use the guac then to top of these Mini Mexican Quiches

Strawberry Basil Lemonade in the perfect way to get any party started… and to get all of your guests tipsy!

Cowboy Caviar

Grilled Proscuitto and Portobello Pizza…. be still my heart!

Kick Ass Pulled Pork Sliders

And to seal the deal, I am finishing the party with my newest creation… a Blueberry Galette!

To make the galette you will need to have some pastry dough on hand…

Roll the pastry dough out into a large circle, about 12 inches in diameter about about 1/4 of an inch thick. Pile up 2 cups of blueberries in the center and sprinkle with 1/2 cup of sugar. Fold the dough up ontop of the blueberries, making sure you can still see most of the blueberries. Egg wash the sides of the pastry dough and bake in a 375 degree oven for about 20 minutes until the crust is golden and flaky.

Whew!!!!!!! So what’s on your menu for Memorial Day? I think I might add a few more items so let me know what your making!

  1. Love all of your recipes. We are having a bbq on Monday. I can’t wait. I need to finalize the menu still:) I might make a strawberry rhubarb galette. Have fun!

    1. you could totally do that! Better yet I’ll just make one for you… I mean who even cares to count the amount of dough sitting in my freezer… it should be illegal.

  2. This looks so beautiful! I am really looking forward to our blueberry picking season here….I hope it warms up a little! I will then be making this fabulous galette! Will also have to try making my own ice cream……

  3. Love the menu! As for the galette, you’ve got some serious discipline. I think I would’ve eaten the whole thing, including the remainder on the pan it baked on. I’m a weirdo, I know!

I am still trying to think of something to make this weekend. The creative juices are running slow right now. Ugh. I’ll probably dream it up tonight or tomorrow. xxoo

  4. The galette looks amazing. If I weren’t a food blogger, I would forget all about the upcoming holidays haha. I almost forgot Memorial Day is coming up in the U.S. This roundup of dishes looks fantastic. Thank for sharing.

  5. What a beauty this is! I just made a strawberry galette and posted about it the other day. I’ve never seen a galette with blueberries before, but yours is inspiring me! Great Memorial Day menu… I wish I could taste it all, though I practically can through those amazing photos!

  6. I am in whole-hearted agreement with you on galettes. I hardly ever make pies now. Why should I, when galettes are so much easier and even look much more artsy, right? They can be made sweet or savory, and they never cease to dazzle.

  7. Hi, Gaby!

I’m Lauren, a fellow LA food blogger! Anyway, Georgia from Comfort of Cooking sent me over your way when I commented on her strawberry gallete, so I had to come check out your website and your blueberry creation! Which, by the way, is gorgeous…

I was telling Georgia how I wanted to make one with boysenberries, because that LA Times article on them was so sad/inspirational. (They basically are amazing but not profitable and barely grown here now).

From what I can tell, you seem to have a found a lovely balance between health and taste, which is something I really strive for, too.

Where in LA do you shop for ingredients? I’m a big Santa Monica Farmers Market fan, but I also go to the regular grocery store to save money and time, too. Can’t wait to poke around your site!

  8. Your blueberry galette looks amazing! I’m spending the weekend out of town with family and I hope to hit up the Farmer’s Market tomorrow morning and we’ll grill up what we find. The only recipe I’m bringing along is grilled corn salad.
