Hawaiian Pulled Pork Sandwich

Jump to Recipe

Imagine a sweet and spicy bbq sauce all over slowly cooked pork butt. It’s kinda the most amazing thing I’ve eaten in the past few weeks and I was totally inspired to make it after seeing these on Tasty Kitchen. The sweetness of the pineapple and the spice from the homemade bbq sauce was a perfect blend to smother the pulled pork. Plus it’s one of the easiest dishes ever – you just throw everything into a big slow cooker and call it a day!

I made a big batch of this last week when I knew it was going to be a crazy week for me and my boyfriend. It’s definitely one of those meals where you can just snag some out of the fridge, throw it onto some bread and call it a meal. And when your exhausted after a super long day of work – that’s really all you want!

  1. This looks so good! I have to ask though, why does it have you cut the pork into 2 inch pieces? I’ve made pork recipes in the slow cooker before that cook through and shred easily even if it’s just all one big piece. Is there something I’m missing? I’d like to avoid cutting it into pieces before it’s cooked if at all possible ๐Ÿ™‚ thanks!

  2. Do you think this would work just as well in a pot on the stove? Don’t own a slow cooker but would still love to try it. Pulled pork has to be one of my favourite foods! Thoughts?

  3. This is making me salivate. I have a weird thing with pineapple – totally not impressed with it as a fruit, but really into it as an addition to savory foods (e.g. on pizza; as a relish w/ meats, etc.) I’ve gotta figure out how to do this without a slow cooker…

  4. is it just me, or does the term ‘pork butt’ make some insanely awesome food seem a little bit unappetizing? even if it is just me, it only lasts for a second–this is one amazing sandwich! ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Gaby – Just curious. Is the pork butt supposed to be cut into two pieces (per the ingredients) or into two inch pieces (per the instructions)? I cut mine into two pieces, and it definitely didn’t pull apart. But I just noticed the instructions say to cut it into two inch pieces and I’m wondering if that is why mine isn’t shredding as well. Would you mind clarifying? The recipe looks delicious and I will definitely make it again, just want to make sure I make it the best way possible for next time ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks!

    1. Hey Rachel! Whoops – thanks for catching that typo! Cut the pork into 2 inch pieces. It should shred either way but when it is in 2 inch pieces it doesn’t need quite as long to cook!

      Thanks!

  6. I’m putting this on my menu for the upcoming week! Just a quick question, the brown sugar, should it be the dark brown or light brown sugar? Thanks!!
