Heifer International

Last week Thomas and I got dressed up and took a car over to Beverly Hills to support one of my favorite organizations, Heifer International.

My family has been supporting Heifer since I was a little girl. I remember gifting our extended family cows, goats and chickens for Christmas for as far back as I can remember! I’d like to think that somewhere out there, there’s a goat named Gaby. Or a llama. Either one would work for me.

So, when I had the opportunity to attend a Heifer event here in LA, I was thrilled! Not to mention the fact that I got to hold a baby goat, and it totally rocked my world. I may or may not have tried to smuggle the goat out of the party and take it with me. It didn’t end well for me. The baby goat was fine.

How I can be this comfortable holding a baby goat, but I’m hesitant to get a dog, is beyond me. Clearly, I have issues.

Anyways, Heifer is an amazing organization. For those of you who are unfamiliar with them, when you donate and help fund a project your money is going towards gifts of livestock, training for the community and veterinary care which is needed to make these gifts successful. These contributions and gifts allow Heifer to help develop farms, create sustainable businesses and provide education to help in areas of extreme poverty.

We empower families to turn hunger and poverty into hope and prosperity – but our approach is more than just giving them a handout. Heifer links communities and helps brings sustainable agriculture and commerce to areas with a long history of poverty. Our animals provide partners with both food and reliable income, as agricultural products such as milk, eggs and honey can be traded or sold at market.
When many families gain this new sustainable income, it brings new opportunities for building schools, creating agricultural cooperatives, forming community savings and funding small businesses.

Heifer not only works in Africa, a place that is near and dear to my heart, but they work all over the world. We spent the evening last week learning about different initiatives going on in various parts of our world and I just wanted to share with you a video they played while we were there.

Meeting the team behind Heifer, along with watching this video, left me feeling incredibly inspired about the wonderful work they are doing all over the world. And I encourage you to check out their website which can be found right here!

I’d like to start gifting people goats and cows for wedding gifts! Do you think I’ll lose friends? Let’s just all start doing it together and make the world a better place, one baby goat (named Gaby) at a time.

  1. What a wonderful organization, very inspiring! With all the craziness in this world it’s nice to be reminded that there are still people out there trying to make a difference and help others. And I think this would make for an excellent wedding gift, it’s the gift that keeps on giving 🙂

  2. Thank you for reminding me that this is the perfect gift – and not just for Christmas! The gift that keeps on giving.
