Insta-Trip: Belem, Brazil

Jump to Recipe

I’m excited to be kicking off a new feature here on What’s Gaby Cooking called insta-trip!! My instagram obsession is equal to that of my guacamole obsession so it’s only fitting that it has a place to live on the site! Here’s the deal – sometimes when you’re visiting a new country, market or restaurant you see beautiful photos everywhere, but you don’t want to bombard everyone on instagram and make them hate you. So rather than posting a billion photos in a row on insta, they are coming over here to Whats’ Gaby Cooking so we can all get a bit of wanderlust!

My first insta-trip feature I’m kicking it back to my Brazilian adventures from 2014! If you tuned in yesterday you’re now well aware of my Acai bowl obsession/situation. As of today, I’ve eaten an Acai bowl 5 out of the last 6 days, and I plan on continuing this trend for the foreseeable future.

But here’s the thing, to be totally honest, I didn’t know anything about Acai until last year!! I’ve been living under a rock. Lucky that all changed after my #onlyinsouthamerica trips to Brazil last year with TAM airlines. On the first trip I found myself deep in the Amazon rainforest and tried my very best to climb and Acai tree. Let me tell you this – it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever tried to do as some of them are 80+ feet tall. (clearly I need to work on my upper body strength). On my second trip we were right at the mouth of the Amazon in Belem, another place where you can find tons of Acai trees along with other interesting ingredients, some of which we don’t even see in America!

One of my favorite parts of the most recent Brazil trip was an expedition to Ver-O-Peso, which was one of the largest open air markets I’ve ever seen. There were colorful ingredients every way I turned and today we’re taking a virtual tour some of those crazy cool ingredients found at the market… including my newest love… Acai Berries!
