It’s that time of year – time for to keep the freezer stocked with Christmas Mix so there’s a little somethin’ somethin’ on hand when the sweet tooth strikes. It’s Chex Christmas Mix and I am READY for it.

It once upon a time had a different name, but times change, we’re growing, learning and moving forward it’s only going to be referred to as Chex Christmas Mix from here on out. Also because we cannot control the way google terms show up in your search results, this might show up as something else but know that we are working every day to SEO Chex Christmas Mix. xx

Have you ever had Chex Christmas Mix? It goes by many names but bottom line – it’s delicious. In the Dalkin household growing up it was just plain old mix.  And Thomas frequently references Chex Christmas Mix when he needs a batch. Bottom line – doesn’t matter what you call it – it’s EVERYTHING.

It’s a sweet and salty snack made with a combination of cheerios, rice chex, wheat chex, pretzel sticks, M&M’s and white chocolate. Image trail mix on steroids – it’s EVERYTHING. My mom’s been making this mix for us for ages, especially during the holiday season because it’s just so gorgeous and festive. I like to make big batches of this and pack it up so I can give it out as gifts around this time of year! Also – FYI – it keeps super well in the freezer.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups Cheerios
  • 3 cups Rice Chex
  • 3 cups Wheat Chex
  • 2 cups Corn Chex
  • 1 cups Pretzel Sticks
  • 2-3 cups m&m’s
  • 24 oz White Chocolate plus an extra 4-8 oz if needed

Instructions

  • In a large bowl combine the Cheerios, Chex, Pretzels and m&m’s. Mix them up a bit, making sure that everything is evenly distributed.
  • Meanwhile, over a double boiler, melt the white chocolate according to the directions on the package.
  • Once the chocolate has melted and is a smooth consistency, drizzle the chocolate over the cereal mix and combine with a wooden spoon or hands. Make sure all the cereal is covered in chocolate. If you need to melt the extra white chocolate to cover all the mix then go right on ahead!
  • Once the entire batch has been combined, lay it out to dry on a large sheet of parchment or wax paper. Let dry for 1 hour so the chocolate is cooled and hard. Break it up into medium pieces and store in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer.

    1. I’ve never had that happen, and I make a double batch and freeze/refrigerate it throughout the season and bring it along to events or get togethers.

  1. Made it! Hope I have enough chocolate on it. I found some Lindt white chocolate coconut bars and they are sooooo good. Would be killer on this!

    1. I found Hershey’s white chocolate covered pretzels with crushed peppermint which I’m going to use instead of regular pretzels!! I can’t wait to try it!

  2. Hi Gaby, i want to mail this with a Christmas present, will it get soggy being in transit too long?
    thanks 🙂

    1. nope! just make sure it’s TOTALLY dry before you pack it up. In fact, I’d freeze it before you ship it

  3. Tried your Christmas Crack this morning for some little gifts. I forgot to pick up pretzels so I used dry roasted peanuts. Before it got completely set-up I tried it and it was a little too sweet for me. So I fixed that with sprinkling some coarse sea salt over the top. Solved that issue. Very easy to make.

  4. So so good! Made this without the pretzels because I didn’t have any on hand and it was still amazing. Might be making this all year long!

  5. I was wondering because I am giving as gifts and it will not be refrigerated. Wanted to make sure that was not necessary even though that is the best way to eat it.

  6. I have been making this for years only slightly different.
Add 2 c dry roasted peanuts and up the pretzel sticks
to 2 c. broken into thirds.
And, yes, everyone in my family calls it Christmas crack!
Only difference is I never have any left to freeze.

  7. Made this for our Christmas Ships party and to give neighbors as gifts. It was a big hit! Thanks for this – pretty, too.

  8. Do you add extra m&ms at the end? Your m&ms in the picture look right out of the package. Mine are all covered in white chocolate.

  9. I don’t own a double boiler. Any tips for melting the chocolate another way – I’m horrible at it! Thanks!

  10. Hey Gaby, this looks delicious! I’m wondering if this would ship well packed in something airtight. I’m making my sister in law a hot cocoa care pack and want to make the shipping worth it so looking for things to put in with it.

    1. I’ve shipped it before – I just bubble wrap it so it doesn’t fall apart and then I try to overnight or 2-day it so they can stick it in their freezer asap and keep it crispy!

  11. Gaby, I just made this and did the slow microwave technique to melt the chocolate, of course it seized up, but fixed it (not ideally) with some boiling water. If you go live On IG you might help us with tricks if the chocolate gets to hot! Thanks and can’t wait to pop it in the freezer once it’s set.

This is my favorite thing to have sitting out when people drop over. I have to restrain myself or I would eat the entire batch!!

  13. Gaby, I have made this and everyone’s cannot stop eating it!!! I want to make it today but all I have are Cheerios cinnamon oat crunch. Should i use it or make a trip to the store to get plain Cheerios?

  14. I watched your IGTV video on how to make this and can’t wait! Question, though, my daughter have a severe nut allergy and can’t have m&ms …any suggestions on another candy to use that would be a good substitute?

    THANKS! Merry, Merry!

  15. Hi. I am going to make this as gifts. Do I first freeze it in a ziplock bag and then when ready to pack up, put into container? Also, what is the oz size glass container shown in photo or the one you recommend for packing in gifts?

    1. you can use any size container that works! Just make sure it’s frozen as much as possible because that’s when it’s most delish. Otherwise room temp is totally fine

  16. Just want to say how much I enjoy your website, IG feed and stories! I watched you IG story and would like to make this for an upcoming party- but in Vancouver, Canada we don’t have access to all these varieties of Chex; I only have been able to find rice Chex. Should I only use the one option and triple the amount or are there other cereals that you would suggest that I can use to replace the corn and wheat for flavour and textures? Your recipes make me oh so happy <3

  17. Hi Gaby.. question.. when I store Christmas crack In a bag for the freezer should I take out as much air as I can from the bag?

  18. Gaby,
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! My wife Lori follows you and cooks so many of your recipes, I feel like I know you and Thomas. I’m not a foodie, but this is my new favorite snack!!!

Gaby, I bought several bags of Trader Joe’s “White Chocolate Baking Chips” to make my first Christmas Crack. Any advice based for trying to melt these? Double boiler setup or microwave? Add oil if it’s too thick or hot water? I’m almost outta time! Thank you! Signed – Procrastinator in San Diego

Disappointed in this recipe.. just expect exactly what it is- white chocolate on a Chex/M&M/pretzel mixture. Wasn’t a big mover, we didn’t see the hype. Did I eat it? Yes. Would I make again? No.

  21. 5 stars
I hate you for this. Some form of this must be in the freezer at all times. I literally have no control.

This recipe speaks for itself – as much as you’ll want to have leftovers, it’s not going to happen. You won’t be able to stop eating it!

  23. Everyone loves this, my family, neighbors and friends
I mix mini pretzels instead of the sticks in my mixture. Either way its still good!

  24. I made the Chex mix Christmas crack one year. Now years later, a friend asked for the recipe. It was really good. Now, I will make it again too

  25. Why do you not use the Corn Chex in any of your Chex mixes? Is there something that doesn’t work well with them in the mix or just a personal preference?

  26. Making this today for Christmas gifts and also myself because its my favorite FYI its also fun to use red and green M+Ms for the holidays!
