Death By Chocolate is date night in GOLD!
Here’s the deal. I’m all about a majorly decadent dessert. If it’s just semi-decadent, I don’t need it. It has to be all about the big splurge and this Death By Chocolate recipe is exactly that. Layers of homemade brownies doused in Kahlua layered with freshly whipped cream and the most glorious chocolate pudding recipe on the planet makes for my kinda treat. Come this Saturday night I’ll be cozying up at home with my husband and a large container of dessert! Date night in never looked so good!
Are you doing the whole Valentine’s Day Dinner at home thing too! Check out some of my fellow food bloggers ideas for the perfect date night in!

Death By Chocolate
Ingredients
For the Chocolate pudding
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- ½ cup cocoa powder
- 1/3 cup cornstarch
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 3 cups whole milk
- 4 ounces dark chocolate
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Whipped Cream
- 2 cups heavy whipping cream
- 3/4 cup powdered sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
For the Kahlua Brownies:
- 10 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 1/4 cups white sugar
- 3/4 cup cocoa powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup AP flour
- handful of chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup Kahlua
Toppings
- Shaved Chocolate
- Sliced Strawberries
Instructions
For the Chocolate Pudding
- In a medium saucepan, combine the brown sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch and salt. Whisk to combine. Add the milk and continue to whisk. Place over medium low heat and cook until thickened, about 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, bring the mixture to a simmer and then reduce the heat to low, and cook for 2 minutes while whisking until very thick. Remove the pan from the heat and add the chocolate, butter and vanilla. Stir to combine. Transfer pudding to a large bowl and refrigerate for 2 hours.
For the Whipped Cream
- In a mixer, combine the whipping cream, vanilla extract and powdered sugar. Whip until soft peaks form. Transfer to a bowl and refrigerate.
For the Kahlua Brownies:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray and line a 9x9 baking tin with parchment.
- In a medium sauce pan, melt the butter over medium high heat. Add the sugar and cocoa powder once the butter is melted. Whisk to combine and remove from heat. Add the salt, vanilla and eggs and continuously whisk until the eggs are combined.
- Add the flour and continue to mix until flour is incorporated. Transfer the batter to the prepared baking pan. Top with chocolate chips and bake for 25-30 minutes.
- Once done. remove from the oven and poke holes all over the brownies with a fork. Pour the Kahlua over the brownies and let them soak it in. Refrigerate for 1 hour and then cut into bite sized pieces.
To assemble, layer the pudding, brownie bites and whipped cream together in either small glasses or a large trifle container and serve.

Yah, this is perfection! Soo good!!
These are SO pretty, Gaby!! I love those chocolate curls!
Mmm….this chocolate!!! Truly a beautiful, delicious dessert!
Great title, I could not have said it otherwise! I would probably not be able to hold back on the Kahlua as it just become my favorite liquor for chocolate desserts.

Love it! Does it call for 1/2, 1/3, or 1/4 cup Kahlua? ( it says ?cup on my screen.) Planning on this for dessert at my next dinner!
1/4!! thanks for the heads up!
Thanks for your speedy reply! You saved my dinner party.
Almost too pretty to eat!!
This is perfection in dessert form!
death by chocolate sounds like a good way to go 🙂
I think that I might be going into a chocolate coma just looking at it but it’s so work it!
I love how easy this is! So lovely!
Yep, this would be the perfect ending to a stay in Valentine’s Day. Exactly what I need this year.
Oh my! Can’t wait for Valentines!! Heck, why wait? I think I will make these tonight!!
Um.. Kahlua Brownies? Sold! Chocolate and Kahlua is one of my fave combos! Saving this recipe! Thanks!
Oh my gawd!! This looks insanely good!!!
Does Kahlua have liquor in it. If so what can you used if you wanted to serve to Children.
it does! I’d just omit it entirely if it’s for kids and just go with the brownies 🙂
these look amazing!!! those brownies = pure perfection!!
There’s no better way to die… chocolate! Delish.
This dessert is just perfection.. seriously no words!
im a go big or go home kinda gal too, and this dessert is going HUGE. love it!
Can I substitute in Bailey’s for the Kahlua? All I could find were four packs of bigger Kahlua bottles at the store… and I don’t need that much Kahlua..
absolutely!!!
Really wonderful! I decided to add Kalhua to the whipping cream just for fun!
Can this be assembled a day ahead
sure can!!
How many servings does this recipe make?
6-8!
Hi Gaby.
It said, “Transfer pudding to the cooled pie shell…”. Do you mean a bowl/pyrex? Does it have to be refrigerated before transferring?
good catch! yes that’s what I meant and you just want to chill it to set before assembling!
Thanks for the quick reply, Gaby!
Also, what brand do you recommend for the dark chocolate?
Ghiradelli
Would this pudding recipe work well for a chocolate cream pie?
Hi Gaby! Can I use a 9×13 pan for the brownies? How long would I have to cook it for?
they’ll be super thin but yes!! Unsure on baking time as I haven’t tested it that way
