Cakes in a Jar

Cakes in a Jar! What a concept huh? Aren’t they the most fabulous things you have ever seen? I know – I love them too!

I’ve always been familiar with putting the dry ingredients for cakes or cookies in a jar, tying on a cute bow, and sending them to your friends homes, but I haven’t really ever seen an actual cake baked into a jar!!! Maybe I am behind the times but I think they are fantastic! I can’t quite remember who it was (and if it was you – let me know in the comments so I can give proper credit!) that brought something similar to these to the National Food Bloggers Bake Sale this year but I literally fell in love in under 2.34 seconds.

Because they are just so darling, I wound up making a boat load of these this year to give away to friends as homemade gifts! Nothing is better than a homemade cake wrapped up with a ribbon and a cute little note!

You can make any kind of cake you want but this year I chose to make the ultra decadent Devil’s Food Cake and of course Chocolate Chip Banana Bread. yum. yum. yum.

Ingredients

Devils Food Cake

  • Adapted from Martha Stewart
  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup + 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 1/4 cups sugar
  • 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract
  • 4 large eggs
  • 3 cups sifted cake flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup milk

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 tsp milk
  • 1 cup bananas mushy
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 bag chocolate chips

Instructions

Devils Food Cake

  • Heat oven to 350 degreesSpray different sized mason jars or glass jars with PAM baking spray. Make sure to remove anything from the glass jar that might melt in the oven.
  • In a mixer, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in vanilla. Add the eggs, one at a time, scraping down the sides while adding the eggs.
  • In a large bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, and salt. Whisk milk into reserved cocoa mixture.
  • With mixer on low speed, alternately add flour and cocoa mixtures to the batter, a little of each at a time, starting and ending with flour mixture.
  • Divide batter into mason jars and fill them up 1/2 way. Place mason jars onto a baking sheet and put into oven on the middle shelf. **Here is where is gets a little tricky** Check on the cakes in a jar every 7-10 minutes to see when they are done. Depending on the size of the jars you used the cakes can take anywhere from 10 - 25 minutes. You'll know when they are done by inserting a knife into the center of the cake and if it comes out clean. Remove the cakes in a jar from the oven and let cook.

I must go and check my freezer to see if I have any bananas…….

  4. Love this idea – especially for Christmas gift giving! Where can these type of jars you show on your posts be purchased?

  5. this is such an adorable idea! this is probably a silly question, but are the mason jars with attached lids (like the ones pictured) actually safe in an oven? i assume that if they have any kind of rubber stripping on the lid that could be problematic, but maybe not.

    1. Hey Laura!

Yes the mason jars with lids are oven safe. I took off the rubber stripping that came on them and then they were good to go!

  6. These are awesome! I’m making them right now, and I just noticed that the Devil’s food cake recipe calls for 1/2 a cup of water, but it doesn’t include water in the recipe. Am I not seeing it? If not — where should we use it?

    Best,
    Mita

  7. Every recipe I’ve seen calls for two piece jar lids. How did you get yours to work with the hinge tops? Don’t they come with a rubber gasket? How can you tell if they sealed?

  8. I see your cakes are in hinged jars. Did you put them in the oven to bake and if so, how did you keep the plastic gasket from melting?

    1. Hi heather! I bought the jars with the removeable plastic pieces so they came out during baking!

    2. Did anyone answer this question ? I’m interested in the answer as well and have looked but not having any luck

    3. are you inquiring about the plastic on the lid? If so – I just remove the lid while baking and then put it back on before serving

  9. My son is deployed. I would love to ship these to him and his buddies. He is a banana bread fanatic. Any idea how long these would keep? Could I freeze them to ship frozen to help freshness. It usually takes 5-7 days for packages to get to him.

    1. Hey Carol! If you froze and then sent and they were securely sealed, I think they would be okay for about 7-8 days. Please also thank him for her service for me. Best, gaby

  10. Hi Gaby can you put any other glass jar in with top on it in the oven to bake a cake or it has to be a mason jar. Why, I ask because I have so many other glass jar beside mason jar. I was wonderful what else can I do with these jars beside putting other little dessert in them. Never thought u could bake in them. Please let me know. I love the idea and the great comment everyone gave. Thanks
